The effect of home and host country cultures on the manager's individual decision making related to ethical issues in a MNC

2011

In this theoretical paper, I review the most frequently cited descriptive models of individual decision making related to ethical issues in business, marketing and international business, as well as related empirical studies. The main goal is to propose an extension of the most comprehensive model of ethical decision making by including host country culture as an additional variable for application to a multinational corporation setting. I also suggest an empirical research design that would help test not only whether the variable affects individual decision making related to ethical issues in a MNC, but also how it influences individual decision making.

The Impact of Ethnicity on an Employee`s Readiness to comply with a Code of Conduct: Differences between German/Austrian and Chinese Employees

2018

An employee faces an ethical dilemma in business situations when he/she is caught in an ethical conflict between his/her individual moral standards and a Code of Conduct, representing the moral values of the company. The authors investigate potential connections between ethnicity and individual ethical decision making. This study obtained original data to analyze the potential impact of ethnicity on employees in Germany, Austria and the PR China.

Managers’ Moral Struggle : A Case Study on Ethical Dilemmas and Ethical Decision-making in the Context of Immigration

2019

This qualitative study explores the types of ethical dilemmas that Finnish managers working in reception centres for asylum seekers have encountered and whether the moral intensity of the ethical issues was observable in the ethical decision-making. It concludes that the majority of the managers interviewed encountered ethical dilemmas relating to the termination of reception services. The ethical dilemmas were stratified into seven groups: ambiguous or complete absence of relevant instructions, lack of support, conflicting values, withholding information, pressure, discretionary stress, and unjust decisions on asylum applications. In addition, various dimensions of moral intensity were obs…

Having the Final Say: Machine Support of Ethical Decisions of Doctors

2014

Machines that support highly complex decisions of doctors have been a reality for almost half a century. In the 1950s, computer-supported medical diagnostic systems started with “punched cards in a shoe box”. In the 1960s and 1970s medicine was, to a certain extent, transformed into a quantitative science by intensive interdisciplinary research collaborations of experts from medicine, mathematics and electrical engineering; This was followed by a second shift in research on machine support of medical decisions from numerical probabilistic to knowledge based approaches. Solutions of the later form came to be known as (medical) expert systems, knowledge based systems research or Artificial In…

Ethical Considerations in Crowdfunding

2020

AbstractThe current chapter addresses ethical issues in crowdfunding practice from a multiple stakeholder perspective. It draws on ethical principles outlined in both classical and business-specific approaches. The discussion first presents classical approaches to ethical decision making. It then discusses whether crowdfunding presents an ethical solution or a source of ethical problems. Later, it suggests a framework presenting a classification of potential ethical dilemmas and pitfalls in crowdfunding practice, as well as potential means for addressing them. The discussion concludes with concrete implications for crowdfunding ethics research and practice.

Predictors of employees` ethical choices in corporate settings in Germany, Austria and China

2018

Atsevišķu darbinieku neētiska rīcība rada starptautiskiem uzņēmumiem juridisku, komerciālu un reputācijas risku. Līdz ar to uzņēmumi īsteno rīcības kodeksus arī to ārvalstu filiālēs.

Between a rock and a hard place : middle managers' ethical decision making and behaviour in the organisational context

2018

This study increases knowledge and understanding of middle managers’ ethical decision-making and behaviour within the context of Finnish higher education. The aim of the research is to develop a new framework for ethical decision-making and behaviour by combining prior theories and empirical knowledge. This dissertation consists of an introductory essay and three articles. The main argument of this research is that through organisations’ socialisation processes, middle managers adopt socially defined managerial roles, which affect their ethical decision-making and ethical conduct. We can say that especially the ethical organisational culture is significant for middle managers’ understanding…

Ethical dilemmas as professional challenge : case study on management in reception centers in Finland

2017

This study examined what kinds of ethical dilemmas managers working in reception centers in Finland have encountered as well as what kinds of strategies they applied in ethically challenging situations, and finally, what ethical dimensions the strategies included. This specific topic has not been investigated before, thus, this study aimed to theoretically and empirically examine it. Theoretical framework bases on Geva’s (2006) typology of ethical dilemmas, Jones’ (1991) issue- contingent model of moral intensity, and Rahim & Bonoma’s (1979) model of the styles of handling interpersonal conflict. The study is qualitative in nature, and was conducted by interviewing ten (10) managers working…

Leadership and Ethical Decision Making among Mauritian Managers

2017

It is proposed that transformational leadership is likely to be associated with higher ethical decision making, while transactional leadership should be related to lower ethical decision making. However, little empirical research provides support for these claims. Using a structured interview schedule, data from 247 managers was collected from three established higher education institutions in Mauritius. Findings indicate that surprisingly, transformational leadership had a negative impact on ethical judgment and intention of subordinates in relation to ethical issues including bribery, nepotism, padding up of expenses’ account and political favouritism, suggesting the possibility of pseudo…
